Appliance Maintenance Tips before the Holidays

Ready to make some holiday memories? Thinking back to previous years, some of our favorite memories are traditional, like roasting the perfect Thanksgiving turkey, baking dozens of holiday cookies, and plugging in twinkling lights. But others are things you might not normally think of, but are a huge part of the holiday season, like flipping the thermostat from cold to heat for the first time and even spending a few extra minutes warming up in a hot shower each morning.

A memory we don’t want to create is a last-minute panic when a kitchen appliance doesn’t work properly. The good news is you can take steps to prevent this from happening! Keep reading to see our appliance maintenance tips so you can ensure a truly magical season for you and your loved ones.

Tip #1: Deep Clean to Prevent Breakdown

We rely on our kitchen appliances to always work for us, but these complex machines sometimes face problems. In a Consumer Reports survey, 6 percent of respondents reported problems with cooking elements not lighting or heating up on ranges, 5 percent of people reported refrigerators that didn’t cool properly, and 11 percent of people said their dishwashers stopped properly cleaning. Don’t let it happen to you!

Deep clean your oven and stove, making sure nothing is preventing the heating elements or gas burners from heating or igniting fully. Pull your fridge away from the wall and clean out the dust from the mechanical coils . Finally, make sure your dishwasher is washed! Set a single dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a full cycle. Once you’ve taken these steps, you’re on your way to a happier holiday season.

Tip #2: Plan a Cooking Test Run

If you’re not usually big on cooking but plan to create a delicious holiday meal from scratch, now is the time to test everything out to alleviate the stress that can come from creating a large holiday meal. A couple of weeks before the event, turn on the oven and fire up the stove to try out a couple of your recipes. Then load everything into the dishwasher to make sure each dish comes out sparkly clean. If something isn’t quite right with your appliances, you’ll have plenty of time to have them repaired before the day of your small event.
